ABOUT US
The Hellenic Meteorological Society (HMS)
Established in Athens on April 8, 1974. HMS is also a member of the European Meteorological Society (EMS | European Meteorological Society). According to its founding statute, its purpose is the promotion and dissemination of Meteorological Science and its applications, as well as the support and assistance to Greek Meteorologists. The objectives of the Society are pursued through scientific lectures, announcements, and discussions on both general and original scientific topics. EMTE is composed of founding, regular, extraordinary, foreign, and honorary members.
Eligibility for regular membership is granted, upon application, recommendation by two regular members, and approval by the Board of Directors, to graduates of the Departments of Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Geology of higher education institutions in Greece or their foreign equivalents, who either hold or will assume positions as Meteorologists at the National Observatory of Athens, the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, or in the laboratories and chairs of Meteorology, Climatology, and Atmospheric Physics of the country’s higher education institutions, or who are employed in other research institutes or organizations whose work relates to Meteorological Science.
The General Assembly constitutes the supreme governing body of EMTE and decides on all matters submitted to it, as well as on any issue relating to the realization of the Society’s purposes. General Assemblies are classified as ordinary and extraordinary, while the Annual General Assembly of the Members is convened once a year, during January or February, by decision of the Board of Directors.
The Hellenic Meteorological Society (HMS) brings together scientists, professionals, and citizens who share a common interest in weather, climate, and the atmosphere. Our mission is to promote meteorological and climatological science in Greece, support research and education, and encourage dialogue between experts and society. Through partnerships with universities, research institutes, public agencies, and the private sector, we work to better understand extreme weather and climate challenges and to transform scientific knowledge into action for civil protection, sustainability, and the well-being of communities. Every two years, HMS organizes the International Conference on Meteorology, Climatology and Atmospheric Physics (COMECAP), a major international event that brings together the scientific community to exchange knowledge, present cutting-edge research, and foster collaborations.
HMS is an official member of the European Meteorological Society (EMS).
